On My Knees

Whatever restraint survived Episode 2 dies in this one. Rachel is still trapped on Ethan’s lap with miles of empty road ahead, and what started as an awkward seating arrangement has become a game neither of them knows how to stop. The closer the road brings them, the harder it gets for Rachel to ignore what she’s sitting on – and once she learns the truth about Ethan’s size, curiosity replaces shame. Ethan, meanwhile, grows bolder with every question, while Bill stays glued to the wheel and his music, the only man in the car who notices nothing. Backseat Trip with My Stepmother has never felt this dangerous.

This episode changes the game entirely. Forced together in the backseat with nowhere to retreat, Ethan and Rachel slide into a conversation that starts nervous and turns shameless, because a young man with something to prove and a neglected woman with nothing left to lose make dangerous traveling companions. Rachel came on this trip as the patient wife who smooths things over, but every mile of Road 69 chips away at that version of her, and the discovery she makes here gives her a reason to stop behaving. Ethan was never the boy his father believed him to be, and once Rachel figures that out, she can’t unthink it.

Bill, of course, remains wonderfully oblivious up front. The louder his music gets, the less he cares about the noise from the backseat, and he has no clue what that noise really means. His blindness gives them just enough cover to test how far curiosity can go before it becomes something far more dangerous.

By the final page, the question is no longer whether Rachel and Ethan will cross the line, but which of them gives in first. The answer is saved for the next episode, To the Last Drop, and judging by the look on Rachel’s face, she has already made her choice.
